Treats Diaper Rash and Dermatitis

Plant-based topical treatments that include Calendula Oil are found to have potent anti-inflammatory nutrients such as flavonoids and linoleic acid. These plant-based antioxidants defend the body’s pro-inflammatory compounds such as cytokines and C-reactive proteins from damage.  The oil extracted from the herbal plant help treat various skin issues among babies such as dermatitis, diaper rash, and ear infections, to mention a few.

  • Dryness or chapping– Calendula oil is a great moisturizer for dry or severely chapped skin.
  • Bruises– Its anti-inflammatory action helps lessen swelling and also helps treat spider veins and those dreaded varicose veins.
  • Minor cuts and wounds– An effective antiseptic and antimicrobial, Calendula oil helps speed up healing of wounds and minor cuts.
  • Common skin conditions– Dermatitis, psoriasis and other skin problems can be soothed using Calendula oil.

Just as for adults, products containing Calendula is great for a whole range of skin conditions common in young babies, including:

  • Nappy/Diaper Rash— According to a study completed on the effectiveness of Calendula on nappy/diaper rash, the severity significantly declined in babies using a product containing Calendula.
  • Eczema— For treating eczema, the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) recommends applying Calendula to the affected area to help soothe irritated skin. UMMC also cites Calendula as an effective remedy for nappy/diaper rash.
  • Baby Acne — It is very common for young babies to have acne across their cheeks, nose and forehead. It usually disappears by itself within a few months but if your little one has a particularly severe case of baby acne, products containing Calendula can help clear it up. We use Calendula Oil in all of our Body Lotion products.
  • Cradle Cap — A form of dermatitis, cradle cap causes oily and scaly patches on a baby’s scalp. It’s not contagious and isn’t itchy but it can be unsightly so products containing Calendula, used daily helps alleviate the dryness.

Several studies on the effects of Calendula have been conducted and it is generally considered safe to use on the skin. Non-toxic and hypo-allergenic, Calendula is a great choice for your baby and other family members with particularly sensitive skin. If you are pregnant, please discuss with your health practitioner prior to using Calendula as there are references warning of potential side effects during pregnancy and for breastfeeding women.
